How to Draw Fantasy Creatures

In fantasy art, creating monsters like shark dragons are fun to draw. Artist made giant monsters popular from the scare of the atomic age. No one knew what the atomic fallout would create so imaginations ran wild. Drawing a shark dragon is a matter of creating a combination of a shark and a dragon. With fantasy art, the monster may be either monstrous or nice. When the artist creates a frowning mouth and huge teeth, the shark dragon will be ferocious looking. When the artist creates a smiling mouth with small teeth, the shark dragon will be approachable and friendly.

Step 1

Draw a cigar shape to represent the body. Have the bottom of the shape curved in to show movement.

Step 2

Create a crescent-shaped mouth. Have it curve upwards for a happy, nice look or downward for a menacing look.

Step 3

Draw zig-zag shaped lines to represent teeth on the top and bottom part of the crescent. They may be large for a ferocious look or small for a meeker look.

Step 4

Add an upside down "U" shape for a nose.

Step 5

Sketch in the tail fin by creating two interlocking triangles at the end of the body.

Step 6

Put in almond shapes for the eyes and lines above them for eyebrows. Have them slanted down towards the nose for a mean, ferocious look.

Step 7

Add a "T" to represent an arm of dragon's wing on the top of the body. Create 2-4 curved lines coming out of the "T" to represent the wingspan. Make each line slightly shorter than the previous one. Connect the lines to create the wings having them curve slightly inwards between lines. Repeat the process for the second wing.

Step 8

Add additional dragon details such as horns for the top of the head or scales on the body.

Step 9

Go over the lines and make any needed adjustments. Reinforce the lines with ink or a marker.
